capshak keeps your video and your project in two different places. Knowing which is which helps when you switch devices.
What is stored where
- Your project (captions, translations, style and every edit) is saved on the server with your account. It saves automatically and opens on any device you log in from.
- Your video is kept in this browser on this device, so the editor can play and export it without uploading it. Inserted videos, sounds and pictures are kept the same way.
- Your own fonts from My fonts stay in this browser only.
The status line in the editor shows Video only on this device until you back it up.
Back up your video (optional)
A backup lets you open the project on another device or browser and keep working.
- Open the project.
- Click Back up video.
- The upload runs in the background (Backing up video… with the percent done). You can keep editing or move to another page.
- When it is done you will see Video backed up until a date.
If the connection drops, you will see Backup paused — will resume, and it continues by itself. Backed-up videos are played through short-lived private links.
How long backups last
Backups are deleted automatically after the retention period, 7 days by default. The date in Video backed up until tells you exactly when. After that the status shows Server copy expired. Your project itself is not deleted; only the server copy of the video is.
Open a project on another device
- Log in on the other device and open the project from Projects.
- If the backup is still there, the video loads from it.
- If not, you will see Video file needed. Click Choose video file and pick the same file. If it looks different from the original, capshak warns you but lets you continue.
For inserted videos and sounds, use Choose the file again in the Edit or Audio tool. Built-in stickers, sounds and music from the asset library work on every device with no backup.
Tips
- Clearing your browser’s site data removes the local copy of your videos. Back up first if you plan to do that.
- Each project has a storage limit for backups. If you see “This project has no storage room left to back up another video.”, remove unused inserted videos.
- Missing My fonts files show a fallback font. Add the font on the new device too. See Style your captions.
- Deleting a project removes its captions and its server copy of the video. This cannot be undone.
- Export needs every video in the edit on this device. See Export your video.
