Captions

Make captions

Generate word-timed captions from your video, then fix their text and timing.

capshak turns the speech in your video into captions where every word has its own timing. That is what makes word animations like karaoke possible.

Generate captions

  1. Open your project and choose the Captions tool.
  2. Check the Spoken language. Leave Detect automatically, or pick the language for better accuracy.
  3. Optional: turn on Fix typos & punctuation with AI and add names or terms in the hint box. See Proofread captions with AI.
  4. Click Generate captions.

You will see Preparing audio…, then Sending audio…, then Transcribing…. When Captions ready appears, the captions show on the video and on the Captions track of the timeline.

What is sent, and what it costs

Your browser pulls out only the soundtrack as a small compressed file (about 240 KB per minute) and sends that. The video itself stays on your device. The server passes the audio to a speech-to-text service and does not keep the file.

Transcription is part of every plan. On Bronze it counts against your 10 minutes a month; on Silver and Gold it is unlimited. The project must also fit your plan’s longest video. A failed transcription doesn’t count. See Plans and pricing.

Re-generate captions starts again from the audio. It replaces the current captions and their translations, and it counts against your plan again.

Edit the text

In the Captions tab, the Lines view lists every caption.

  1. Click a caption to jump the playhead there.
  2. Click its text and type to correct it. You can also double-click a caption in the viewer to edit it in place.
  3. Use Delete caption to remove one, or Add caption at playhead to write one by hand.

Fix the timing

  • Split at playhead: put the playhead inside a caption (away from its edges) to break a long line in two.
  • Merge with next: join a caption with the one after it.
  • Move or resize: drag a caption block on the Captions track of the timeline, or drag its edges to change when it starts and ends.

Timing changes apply to the original captions and to every translation at once.

Tips

  • Captions belong to the main video. Inserted videos do not get captions.
  • Cutting a part of the video also hides its captions in the preview and export.
  • Want to cut by deleting words? Switch to the Transcript view. See Text-based editing.
  • Next steps: Style your captions and Translate captions.

Troubleshooting

  • “This video has no audio track to transcribe.” The file has no sound. Add captions by hand instead.
  • “Transcription is busy. Try again in a minute.” Wait a moment and click again. Nothing was counted.
  • Wrong language detected. Pick the Spoken language yourself and re-generate.
